On Sunday August 2nd 2009 at 12.10, the whistle will blow and a majestic historic old steam train will slowly pull out of Dun Laoghaire station once again to celebrate 175 years of the first train line in Ireland

In association with the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland and Iarnrod Eireann, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council presents The Kingstown Special so that folks can travel back in time on a grand old steam train with vintage railway carriages, a beautifully restored snack and bar café.

DLR Events and Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company will have free family entertainment on the Harbour Plaza all afternoon featuring from:

12.30pm to 2.30pm      The Steadfast Brass Band
3pm to 4pm                 The No. 1 Army Band
4.30pm to 5.30pm        The Blue Heaven Barbershop Chorus

The first railway in Ireland, in 1834, was the Dublin and Kingstown Railway (D&KR) between Dublin and Kingstown (now Dún Laoghaire), a distance of 10 km (6 miles). The entire route forms part of the present day Dublin Area Rapid Transit electrified commuter rail system. This same route will be used for the Kingstown Special on August 2nd.

Five steam train trips between Dun Laoghaire and either the original destination Connolly or the extended line Bray will be running during the day departing from Dun Laoghaire at 12.10, 13.34, 15.28, 16.54 and 18.28. Tickets cost just €4 for adults and €1 for under 16s

Tickets will be available from the 27th of July from Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council Cash Office, County Hall, Marine Rd, Dun Laoghaire or from Dalkey Heritage Centre, Dalkey Castle.

Tickets are limited to the number of seats on the train and strictly on a first come first served basis and there will be no access to the train without a ticket.  Each trip includes turn around time where the steam engine will uncouple from the train and move to the other end of the train for the return journey. There will be some waiting time at the turnaround location.
